Hanan Az Zahra Syafina’s thesis defense was held online on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) in Building J, Room 307, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Diponegoro University (Undip). The thesis defense marked the final stage in completing her Master’s degree, a journey that has been fraught with ups and downs to reach this point. Hanan is a recipient of a 2024 LPDP scholarship.

Her thesis defense was titled “Analysis of Nipah (Nypa fruticans) Biomass, Carbon, and Chlorophyll Based on Field Data, Sentinel-2A Imagery, and UAVs on the East Coast of Sumatra, West Tanjung Jabung, and Pangkal Babu, Jambi.” Her presentation explained that the N. fruticans vegetation in Pangkal Babu is structured as a nipah belt that forms three ecological zones (estuarine, transitional, and coastal). Field-based estimates show a decreasing productivity gradient from estuarine to coastal areas, reflected in a decrease in biomass, carbon stock, and total chlorophyll per clump. In Sentinel-2A (10 m resolution), modeling accuracy varied between zones with biomass RMSE of 31; 11; 4 kg/100 m2, carbon RMSE of 16; 5; 2 kg C/100 m2, and chlorophyll RMSE of 2,453; 532; 371 mg/100 m2 (Zones 1–3). In UAV (GSD ±2.19 cm) at the clump scale, biomass RMSE was 2.4; 1.5; 0.9 kg/clump, carbon RMSE of 1.2; 0.7; 0.4 kg C/clump, and chlorophyll RMSE of 269.7; 157.4; 49.8 mg/clump (Zones 1–3). These findings confirm that Sentinel-2A is effective for landscape monitoring, while UAV is more precise at the clump scale and is very helpful for calibration and validation, making them complementary for multiscale monitoring of blue carbon stocks and the physiological condition of nipah palms.

Thesis Examination was attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Hartoko, M.Sc. (Supervisor 1), Dr. Ir. Pujiono Wahyu Purnomo, MS (Supervisor 2), Dr. Muh Helmi, S.Si., M.Si (Examiner), Dr. Churun Ain, S.Pi, M.Si (Examiner) Dr. Aninditia Sabdaningsih, S.Si, M.Si (Manager). Based on the presentation that has been delivered, Hanan Az Zahra Syafina is declared PASSED with minor revisions (not changing the concept but changing or improving the format). Keep up the spirit to complete the revision to achieve a new degree and Good luck!
