Lisa Ruliaty’s thesis defense was held online on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) in Building J, Room 307, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Diponegoro University (FPIK). The thesis defense marked the final stage in completing her Master’s studies, a journey that has involved both joy and sorrow.
The thesis defense was titled “Artemia Enrichment with Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Synbiotics on the Immune Response, Growth, and Survival of Glass Eel (Anguilla bicolor) Seedlings.” In her presentation, she explained that enriching Artemia with probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics had different physiological impacts on glass eel fry. Probiotic treatment was able to increase the highest growth, but was not followed by physiological stability and optimal survival rates, indicating a trade-off between growth and maintaining the immune system. This was evident in the low survival rate and erythrocyte count, which can impact oxygen transport capacity and long-term physiological resilience. Prebiotic and synbiotic treatments produced a more balanced response, with better survival and immunological parameters despite slightly lower growth rates. The increase in erythrocyte count, phagocytic activity, and lymphocyte proportion in both treatments indicated improved immune capacity and physiological conditions that were more resistant to stress and infection. This suggests that the health and survival of eel fry are more influenced by immune system balance and gut health than simply rapid growth.
